Fortress Mentality

Acrylic on canvas panel, 16×20″

Fear can be useful, but it can also imprison us. When we’re hunkered down in “seal the entrances, raise the drawbridge” mode, it’s hard to think of anything else. We’re protecting ourselves, but we’re now obsessed with protecting ourselves.

And there’s not much energy left for anything else.

Available for sale on a Pay What You Will basis.

Coming Out

Acrylic on canvas panel, 16×20″

I seem to like the black outlines with bright colors no matter what style I’m painting.

I’ve painted several, and I’ll keep posting for sure. So far this series seems sustainable, but what do I know? Like everything else I do, I might get bored with it in a few weeks. Or months. Or years if I’m lucky.

But things are bubbling up in a most unexpected way. This series is different in that most of my previous work was focused on making something pretty or making a point of some kind, but these are about something deeper. Something emotional, about navigating this world, this human experience. They just seem to emerge as I play with and develop each piece. You’ll see as I keep posting these.

So for those reasons I think this might have legs.

Aloha

5×7″ Oil on canvas board

This is from oh, maybe a couple of months ago. I still have a bunch of these little ones, but I particularly like this one. Very beachy and peaceful.

Windermere

12×12″ oil on canvas

I like the art deco-ish feel of these. Kind of stained glass also, no?

It doesn’t look anything like my recent portrait paintings, but that’s characteristic of the way I work. I jump around styles to keep from getting bored with painting.

All my work, past present and future can be had on a Pay What You Will basis. You decide what it’s worth to you and then we just make it happen!

Harriet Tubman

Oil on Arches oil paper, 11×11″

Harriet Tubman as a young woman. Look at those eyes and the steely determination in her face. What a courageous woman.

Gen. Sykes 2.0

10×10″ Oil on 140lb. watercolor paper

So this is another version of Gen. George Sykes, this time with a gold halo instead of a blue disc behind him. It’s also a bit larger than the last one.

Sometimes I just want to try something a little different so I’ll do another version. I have two of Harriet Tubman I’m working on now. I’m not sure if the first one will see the light of day outside of my studio, it’s on the drying rack until it’s ready to proceed. The second one is nearly done and I’m really happy with it.

Continuing on with my American Hero series, several more are in the works.

Sarah Winnemecca, American Hero

10×10″ Oil on watercolor paper

Back to my American Heroes series!

Sarah Winnemucca was an amazing woman at a time when women and Native Americans were given little respect. So much more than I can relate here. Try this link from the Nevada Women’s History Project for a good overview of her remarkable life.

Big Bend National Park

As an artist with ADHD, I’ve finally decided it’s OK to work in different styles, although it’s something I’ve struggled with and beat myself up for most of my career. But this is me. So from now on you’ll see work in at least three different styles. Or more, if I start to get bored.

All my work, past and present is available for sale on a Pay What You Will basis.

Maj. Gen. George Sykes

Oil on unstretched canvas 9×9″

Maj. Gen. George Sykes 9×9″ oil on unstretched canvas

I haven’t done portraits for the last few years, and I was getting burned out with the dot paintings. I’ve been playing with this technique for the last couple of weeks and I really like it. I’m eager to try it with landscapes and other genres too.

I’m thinking of doing a portrait series on historical figures — what do you think?
