Algerian Immigrant, Ellis Island

Oil on Arches oil paper, 11×14″

Back to the portraits in oils today. I still have another five of these that I’ve begun, but I’m having so much fun and I’m finding the others that I’ve been doing lately so satisfying that these portraits have gone on the back burner for a while.

Having said that, I’m particularly pleased with this one. I don’t see fear in his gaze but rather a calm confidence and determination to face whatever unknowns lie ahead.

This fellow is part of my American Hero series. So why do I call him an American Hero? He left his country with everything he knew, including possibly his language, to start again in a strange land where he was a stranger to the culture, the laws and pretty much everything else. A brave and heroic move indeed! But he came and became part of the story of America, coming through Ellis Island as my mother did. Adding his story to the story of America.

Purple Majesty

Acrylic on paper, 8×10” $285.00

My paintings are about the reality behind what we see with our eyes. The plants, the river, the mountains, the clouds, the reflection of the clouds in the water and even us and our thoughts and dreams. Everything is energy, interconnected in a vast cosmic dance of consciousness and all is one.

Round the Bend: Acrylic on paper, $250.00

What’s round that bend? Looks like a magical place to me. Of course every place can be magical though — if you choose to find the magic in it.

Autumn Waits

Acrylic on panel, 8×8″ $495.00

It’s not always about some profound metaphor or insight. Sometimes it’s enough just to feel and rejoice in the vibrance of existence.

Which of course can be pretty profound in itself.

Not to mention a lot of fun!

On The Other Side Of The Fire

Acrylic on canvas board 11×14″

Sometimes it’s true that the promised land, or at least some pretty good things lie on the other side of the fire. By which I mean something difficult or unpleasant that we go through. It’s happened to us many times.

One of the more memorable ones was how we arrived at a home that is just wonderful for us. Three years ago we were evicted from our rental of 17 years. We felt betrayed, we were hurt and angry. We scrambled to find another place, and moved. That didn’t work out well, and after six months we broke the lease and forfeited our security deposit.

But we found the home we’re in now, we were able to afford buying it, and it’s the nicest place we’ve lived in for over 25 years. There’s studio space for both of us, central air, and on and on. It sure seemed like we were going through the fire with all the emotional turmoil, having to move twice in six months, moving to a different state, with all the red tape that entailed.

But if we hadn’t been evicted and decided to look for a new place after our first forced move the home we’re in now wouldn’t have been up for sale at a price we could afford at exactly the time we needed it.

Now this isn’t pollyanna, I know sometimes the fire destroys. But so often it’s just clearing out the old to make way for something better than we thought possible.

The Other Side of the Road

Acrylic on canvas, 14×11″

The Other Side of the Road

Looks pleasant enough over there, but are you willing to do what it takes to get there?

First you have to go through the red hot lava field. The good news is, there’s water on the other side of the lava. But then you’ll have to cross the water. Then if you manage to gain the opposite shore, there’s that road.

Now, here’s the tricky part. You see, the road is very pretty, you get a great close up view of what lies beyond, plus it’s a good way to assess where you’ve come from and how much you’ve accomplished. Which is considerable!

But it’s the road of temptation, it’s smooth and flat, and easy. And it’s really the greatest obstacle you’ll face, because this time it’s from within. You could spend the rest of your time happily going back and forth just sightseeing and congratulating yourself on your achievement. And that’s where your journey would stop.

But if you want to discover what lies beyond, you’ll have to let go of the path of comfort and prepare to take on the jungle and the terrain. Into terra incognita

The hero’s journey.

What say you, hero?

The Hills Are Alive With the Sounds of Pharaoh

Acrylic on stretched canvas, 10″x10″

This is the last (for a while at least) of the pharaoh/pyramid/children of immigrants paintings. It’s another one with the more random dot colors in several areas of the painting where appropriate. I think I’ll stay with this approach.

Some aspects of nature (crystals, for example) are very structured and ordered. Others appear almost random. I’m not going to get into chaos theory here, and of course I’m not attempting to describe these things literally. It’s more like I’m riffing on them.

Tsunami Alert

Acrylic on MDF panel, 6″x6″ $96.00

Things are changing, and they’re changing fast and they’re changing massively. Things are not going to continue as they always have.

Of course, the only thing constant is change. Which isn’t necessarily bad, since stasis is death. But too rapid change can also be death. What will be swept away? Will it be a cleansing or destruction?

All I know is it’s coming.

The sides of this artwork are attractively painted black and you can hang it immediately with the attached paracord.

To Be Human

Acrylic on MDF panel, 6’x6′

To Be Human

Acrylic on MDF Panel, 6”x6”

$96.00

There’s a little good in the worst of us, a little bad in the best of us. Or substitute whatever opposite traits you want.

There’s so much depth to the Yin/Yang metaphor, I’m still exploring it. People, things, situations, relationships, are seldom if ever all one thing or another. The Yin/Yang metaphor simplifies things to get the important point across, but in reality there is a multitude of Yin/Yang dynamic that would be a very busy painting indeed if I were to try to depict even a small bit of it.

An incredibly interconnected multidimensional network of Yin/Yang. The web that forms the Universe is complex beyond understanding, but we can understand that it is. And that’s gotta be helpful.

We exist within nature, symbolized by the green vegetation and clouds, and within a sparkling Universe of spirit/energy.

The blue at the center of the neck is the core of spirit/energy that forms our center, that keeps us balanced, that keeps us connected to what matters.

The sides are attractively painted black and you can hang it immediately with the attached paracord.

The Nature Of Love

Acrylic on MDF panel, 6″x6″

A little of thee in me, and a little of me in thee. And from the union, new life springs. Not necessarily a physical child, but a new dynamic, a relationship.

Oh, and this isn’t just about romantic love. Or just love between humans. This is about all forms of love across the Universe. Between thoughts and ideas, all beings, so-called inanimate things? It really depends on your understanding of reality how far you can take this.

I seem to be on a bit of a yin/yang theme lately. A couple more exploring this path coming soon.

The sides are attractively painted black and you can hang it immediately with the attached paracord.
