Autumn at the Pond

11″x14″ Acrylic on canvas $200.00

I wanted to do something larger than 6″ square. It took me a while to finish this one, and not just because of the amount of time it takes to paint that many dots. There’s more thinking and pondering time involved.

When I’m looking at a smaller piece, it’s easier to grasp the entire thing at once. So I know what’s working and what may or may not be needed pretty quickly. Also, because of the small size, there’s only so much I can fit in, given the limit of detail I can get with dots. Unless I use microscopic nanodots (new word!) which isn’t all that appealing to me.

Anyway, I really like the way this one came out. Now I’m thinking I like it so much I’d like to try something even larger. Maybe this is a solution to my ADHD quickly bored, oh look another shiny object over there! Meaning changing up between larger and smaller pieces, each with unique kinds of challenges. Work on big or small pieces until I’m bored, then switch.

When I was a little boy, we moved a lot since my father was in the Foreign Service. So most of my toys went into the shipping crates, and when everything was unpacked months or weeks later, the old toys were new again!

So like that.

The Sacred Heart Of Mother Earth

Acrylic on canvas, 11″x14″

This is my largest dot painting to date. I like how Mother’s heart is sparkling with energy and life! If you find it resonates with you more, substitute “God” for “Mother Earth.” However you say it, all that life is borne of love and sustained by love.

This artwork is available for just $200.00. The sides are attractively painted black so you can hang it immediately until you get it framed.

Lush

This reminds me of my earliest years in Honduras. We didn’t live in the jungle of course, but the whole environment was just — well, lush.

Refining the Technique

I did a bit of this in the last piece, “Moonshine” but it’s much clearer here. That is smaller dots within the larger dots. Also tiny dots between the larger ones. I really like the extra texture this can add. Also, it looks kind of like living cells, which is part of what I’m trying to show in these paintings. That is, that everything that exists is made up of not cells exactly, but little packets of energy.

These energy bits may not fit the technical definition of life, but they sure do seem to have a life of some kind. Mind you, my own take is that everything has some sort of life and some sort of consciousness, albeit very very different from anything we might recognize from our own frame of reference.

I also did something completely different, in that up until this piece, I’ve been using background colors that are a darker version of the main color of the dots in that particular area. Then I paint a heavy black outline around each area of color before painting the dots.

For this painting, I painted the entire surface black, and drew the composition directly on the black background, so no heavy black outlines as I’ve been using. I’m not sure if I want to keep doing this, but I think it worked in this piece.

This small artwork is available for just $96.00, ready to hang with attached paracord and sides attractively painted black. Or you can frame it if you prefer. Perfect for small or intimate spaces!

Moonshine

Acrylic on panel, 6″x6″

Moonshine is more subtle than sunshine, gentler, romantic and whisper quiet. And just look how it caresses the trees. Lucky trees.

I’ve actually been painting, but haven’t posted in a while because three of the last paintings taught me that they didn’t work with this pointillist technique.

As I experiment more with the dotting style, I’m learning more not just about the technique itself, but also what kind of drawing and imagery works best with it.

Most of my career as an artist has been as a cartoonist or humorous illustrator, so I am very comfortable with a cartoony style. But I don’t want a childish look for these, which the last three were. For instance, Keith Haring’s work was definitely on the cartoony side, but not childish.

I think what I’m really trying to achieve is a blend of a cartoony happy vibe with a bit of a mysterious (and ultimately unknowable) metaphysical undercurrent, or subtext.

Spinning Sun

Acrylic on reclaimed wood, 5″x14″

I think sometimes that maybe the sun just can’t help itself from spinning like a pinwheel and radiating out life and light. And in that light all that other life stuff like love and joy.

You have to respect the sun for its unfathomable power, but I wonder if it has a fun side also. I think it must.

This small artwork is is available for just $152.00, ready to hang with attached paracord and sides attractively painted black. No framing required or desired. Perfect for small or intimate spaces!
