Simplify. Simplify. Simplify. I’ve found that these little drawings are the best way for me to avoid getting bogged down in detail. And I can really get bogged down in details. Badly.
But of course then I do my dots, and that fills my detail jones. So I end up with big shapes with no detail and lots of little detail. Sort of.
I don’t always draw these on grid paper, but it keeps me within a framework that forces me to simplify. It’s just not possible to get much detail in these. Sometimes I have to go through two steps to get simple enough. But at the end I have something I can work with.
Even if you paint in detail, thumbnails are a great way to get the main points of your composition down and not lose them as you add more and more detail.
