“Sometimes you have to go out on a limb because that’s where the fruit is.” Anyone remember what book that quote is from?
Please don’t ask me what the creature is, because it’s just an imaginary creature. Of course, all suggestions are welcome!
Technical notes: acrylic underpainting with acrylic markers then acrylic glazes over some of the marker, then more markers over that. Whew!

And don’t forget:
All work is for sale, Pay What You Want. Seriously. I don’t believe that original art should be available only to those with deep pockets. Not every art lover has deep pockets. So just tell me what price works for you. (You pay the shipping, though.😊)
Another one exploring the same theme as the last post. How do you graciously accept a compliment anyway? Very easy for some people, not so much for others.
Staying humble but being pleased is nice, and I don’t think that crosses over into excessive pride. After all, true humility isn’t about putting yourself down, it’s much more about seeing yourself accurately, neither more nor less than who and what you are. And if there’s something about you worthy to be admired (there always is!) then that’s an honest source of healthy self-esteem.

Is a compliment always a good thing? How does one accept it? Or should one? Must a person always evaluate a compliment for hidden motives? Is it a tactic or something innocently sincere?
What a shame we have to think thoughts like this…

But here’s the thing — My patrons help keep me in art supplies. Social Security helps keeps a roof over my head and food on the table. So after a full career in art I can now indulge my mission of making original art accessible to those who ordinarily wouldn’t be able to afford it. That’s it! So if you can pay a higher price, thank you! But if not, don’t be embarrassed to tell me what works for you, because I’d be truly glad to help you own one of my original pieces at a price that works for you.
Another acrylic underpainting with acrylic markers over it. “Sky Mother” might have been lonesome so I created “Lord of the Clouds.” Sounds like they have overlapping duties, though. I’m not sure why this image came out a bit dark compared to the original, but it’s close enough to get the idea across.

This was an acrylic underpainting with acrylic markers over it, something I’ve been enjoying very much lately. It’s a great way to be able to make marks much more spontaneously than with a brush. The marker lines express a real energy and movement, and they’re done fast, pretty much as it looks like they would be.
The smaller size of these works really well with the markers, about 8×8” to 8×10”. I’m not sure how to ramp this up to larger works, but as always, I love to experiment and learn. I might need to get larger tip markers to work on the larger works, but that’s a whole other expense. I might try taking some of what I’ve learned with the markers and seeing if I can adapt it to brush work.
Will I be able to obtain the same energy and spontaneous feel with brushes? Probably not quite, if for no other reason than that acrylic paint applied with brushes dries much more slowly than markers do, even using a hair dryer to speed things up. Using the acrylic markers is much more like drawing with a pencil or even pastels. Still, I look at the energy and spontaneous feel Van Gogh achieved with oil paint (which seem like they never dry!) and I’m thinking it might just be possible.

I’m always amazed by the tricks skaters do. They look so dangerous, and I guess they are, but they are amazing to watch. So I upped the danger level a tad here and we have a skater doing an Ollie off of a cliff face.
I was thinking about maybe making T’s and hoodies available with this image for all skaters and fans. Or I could make custom prints if there’s any interest in that.
Thoughts?

Well I’ve had a few demands on my time the last week or two what with the broken foot and a few other “life is what happens” distractions, so I thought I’d share what’s on the drawing board in various stages of completion. These are all linoleum, all of it carved, some of it partially painted, some primed waiting for their colors.
I hardly ever have any narrative in mind when I do a painting. I sketch things that I think are kind of neat, and some of those turn into paintings for the same reason. I just think it might be something cool to look at. But then as I continue with the painting, or sometimes not until after it’s done, I start to find meaning in it.
And that’s what happened here. I don’t know why I put the insect flying out of the plants growing out of the top of the person’s head, but as I painted, I thought that it represented unwanted and distracting buzzing thoughts leaving. Then I thought oh wait, the growth represents nature and a natural state of peace and a loving place where life can thrive.
At first, I thought the person was going to be a man, but it naturally developed into something with more androgenous characteristics that really represents just any human being at peace with themself and the world around them. And then as I looked further, I thought that it was a timeless representation of an evolved humanity.
Timeless.
So when I look at this artwork now I think of how many civilizations and cultures have come and gone over the eons, how those lives mattered so deeply to the people that lived then, every bit as much as our own personal lives and loves and sorrows, our wars and conflicts, our joys matter to us right now in each of our personal journeys. And how forgotten they are now.
As we too will some day be forgotten. I think about how some day our own era will be an ancient time for archeologists to study and puzzle out. I wonder what future generations thousands of years from now, with their own joys and sorrows, will make of our time.
And I wonder what those times will be like for humanity.

This is unmounted linoleum, so it will need to be professionally framed.

Reflecting on some of the themes ahead. I do hope, but sometimes it seems like an act of courage to do so in the face of the challenges, known and unknown, that are facing us this year.
But isn’t that what we’re supposed to do? Have hope in the face of all evidence to the contrary? Not that there isn’t good evidence for hope as well, but the challenges just seem to get more, well, challenging all the time.
Hold on to that flower and don’t let go. Because giving up hope doesn’t help anything or anyone.

Here it is the worst arctic cold in several years, and I’m feeling the heat from this one. The summer heat in cities seems so much more oppressive than the same heat in the countryside. At least our guy here has found some greenery, maybe a city park to hang out in.
I’m glad I live in a more rural setting now. Haven’t lived in a city in decades.
And now I can’t get the song out of my head this week either… 🎶 Who’s the song by, anybody remember?
