Serenity

9×12” Acrylic on unmounted carved linoleum

I hardly ever have any narrative in mind when I do a painting. I sketch things that I think are kind of neat, and some of those turn into paintings for the same reason. I just think it might be something cool to look at. But then as I continue with the painting, or sometimes not until after it’s done, I start to find meaning in it.

And that’s what happened here. I don’t know why I put the insect flying out of the plants growing out of the top of the person’s head, but as I painted, I thought that it represented unwanted and distracting buzzing thoughts leaving. Then I thought oh wait, the growth represents nature and a natural state of peace and a loving place where life can thrive.

At first, I thought the person was going to be a man, but it naturally developed into something with more androgenous characteristics that really represents just any human being at peace with themself and the world around them. And then as I looked further, I thought that it was a timeless representation of an evolved humanity.

Timeless.

So when I look at this artwork now I think of how many civilizations and cultures have come and gone over the eons, how those lives mattered so deeply to the people that lived then, every bit as much as our own personal lives and loves and sorrows, our wars and conflicts, our joys matter to us right now in each of our personal journeys. And how forgotten they are now.

As we too will some day be forgotten. I think about how some day our own era will be an ancient time for archeologists to study and puzzle out. I wonder what future generations thousands of years from now, with their own joys and sorrows, will make of our time.

And I wonder what those times will be like for humanity.

Do you like it? If you do, imagine what fun it would be having this original artwork delivered right to your door (like where else would it get delivered?).

This is unmounted linoleum, so it will need to be professionally framed.

Summer In The City

6×8” Acrylic paint with acrylic markers on carved and painted linoleum block

Here it is the worst arctic cold in several years, and I’m feeling the heat from this one. The summer heat in cities seems so much more oppressive than the same heat in the countryside. At least our guy here has found some greenery, maybe a city park to hang out in.

I’m glad I live in a more rural setting now. Haven’t lived in a city in decades.

And now I can’t get the song out of my head this week either… 🎶 Who’s the song by, anybody remember?

Let me expand on that a bit: It’s not that I don’t think artists shouldn’t get paid well, because of course I do. But here’s the thing — My patrons (patreon.com/spyderwebb) keep me in art supplies. Social Security keeps a roof over my head and food on the table. So after a full career in art I can now indulge my mission of making original art accessible to those who ordinarily wouldn’t be able to afford it. That’s it! So if you can pay a high price, thank you! But if not, don’t be embarrassed to tell me what works for you, because I’d be truly glad to help you own one of my original pieces at a price that you can afford.

Black Magic Woman

8×10” Acrylic paint with acrylic markers on carved and painted linoleum block

She started out as just a portrait piece, but she wanted the vibes showing her power. So of course, I complied. Can’t you just feel her energy radiating out in every direction?

And now I can’t get the Santana song out of my head… 🎶

La Parisienne

5×7″ Acrylic and acrylic markers on carved linoleum block

A bit stereotypical but she gets the Paris vibe across, don’t you think? Confident, sure of herself and her culture, ready for the next baguette! You can almost imagine hearing the waves of music with Edith Piaf singing in the background somewhere.

This is mounted linoleum, so it’s a bit heavier than my recent work. The sides are painted black so you can hang it unframed, but if you want it framed, I suggest going to a professional frame shop. It will be shipped with hanging hardware attached.

Shroom

7×5″ Acrylic and acrylic markers on carved linoleum block

OK, looks like we’re getting a bit psychedelic here, doesn’t it? Maybe it brings back some intense memories for some of you. That wasn’t my intention as I started this one, but as it progressed, the colors just seemed to hark back to that vibe.

White Cloud

7×5″ Acrylic and acrylic markers on carved linoleum block

Even though it’s just an insubstantial cloud of mist, the cloud seems to have its own force field, or energetic aura if you will. I mean, it’s not even a stable structure, or really a structure of any sort, is it? And yet as tenuous as its existence is, it seems to have an influence on its surroundings. How much more so our own (somewhat) more solid beings?

Nothing exists completely in isolation.

Lighthouse Watching

10×8″ Acrylic and acrylic markers on carved linoleum block

So this is the new exploring I’m doing now. I love the massive presence these have, they really stand out from purely flat art.

The lighthouse is a beacon of hope as a storm gathers. But more than a storm, there’s a powerful vortex threatening everything in its path. The image presents a hopeful thought to cling to in these times, reminding us that if we keep our eyes on the light of goodness and love in the darkest and most violent of times there will ultimately be a day when the storm has disappeared and the light remains. The light always remains.

Cliff Notes

8×6” Acrylic paint with acrylic markers on cradled wood panel

Also showing the back so you can see the construction of the support. I saw this panel in the store for a reasonable price so I thought I’d try it. It’ll be shipped with hanging hardware, and there’s no need to frame it. Unless you really want to, then go for it. I do like painting on this kind of wood panel, I’ll pick up a few more down the line.

I like to think of this as a couple thriving together in a bleak landscape. If you have your partner/dear friend with you, the two of you can get through a lot of life’s bleak landscapes better than you ever could alone.

Right now, I’m working in a completely different medium. Stay tuned, coz for now I’m keeping it under my hat. And being a hat guy, I do have a lot of hats!

Where Does it Lead

11×14” Acrylic paint & brushes with acrylic markers on canvas panel

This is the largest painting I’ve attempted using acrylic markers, but of course there’s a substantial portion of this that’s done with paint and brushes before finishing it off with markers. I’m liking the effect, and the fact that combining the two tools lets me work bigger much more easily.

Massive clouds rising up into a deep blue sky. And a river that will take you to…?

That’s the thing about being human, isn’t it? We always want to know what’s out there beyond the next bend, over the next hill. Go ahead. Go there. Tell me what you find.

Purple Mountain

6×6” Acrylic paint with acrylic markers on canvas panel

Continuing my working with the combination of paint & brushes with acrylic markers.

I like the way the river tucks behind the hill on the left.
