The Other Side: Almost There

Acrylic on Panel 8×8″

I thought about calling this “Fire at the Cotton Candy Works” but that wasn’t quite as evocative.

Hello, I Am Flower

Acrylic on panel, 8×8″

“Hello, I Am Flower” is a representation of the Flower Diva. Or to be a little more scientific, a morphic field pattern of flowers. Thanks to Rupert Sheldrake for his morphic field concept.

Escape From the Madness of Sleep

Acrylic on canvas, 18×24″

Well it sure feels like madness anyway. It used to be called “the little death” but I think it’s more accurately a form of nightly insanity.

Oh I know all the supposed wonderful things about dreams giving you great insight, and lucid dreaming and all, but with rare (very rare) exceptions, my experience has been that sleep (at least the dreaming portion) is a mental state to be escaped quickly and thankfully.

Not that dreams are always bad, because those are also the rare exceptions. But still, dreams are just nuts in a way I can’t wrap my head around. And honestly, it’s never proved to be worth the effort.

Just my experience, anyway. How ’bout you?

Mars Rising

Acrylic on Canvas, 12×12″

No special metaphysical message with this one, other than continuing to explore the essential unity of everything.

Let Us Not Forget The Little Ones

Acrylic on cradled wood panel 6.5×12″

There are more microbes that are part of us than our own cells. Or are there? Technically, it’s a symbiosis, but aren’t they in a real sense an essential part of our physical being?

And aren’t we one with them as well as those we can see more easily?

All life is connected. We all depend on one another.

In Love With Love

18×24″ Acrylic on canvas

(Study) 11×14″ Acrylic on canvas board

Well, it’s finally done. Complete with Mars in the sky. I know, there’s a lot of finicky detail to take in with this one.

I usually have some semi profound and/or pretentious things to say about my paintings, but I think you can go with just the title on this one and take it anywhere you want to go.

I know it can be helpful for the artist to write something about their art, but if I could put it into words I wouldn’t have to paint it, would I?

So what am I trying to say with this artwork? I’m not sure the title even relates to what I’m trying to say with it. Now that I think about it, I’m not trying to “say” anything with my art. If I were, my paintings would just be illustrations to flesh out a narrative of some sort. And they’re not that. Usually, anyway — don’t hold me to that in every case!

I think the pieces just want to be born. It’s my job to deliver them, then they can interact with each viewer in a very personal way. And I don’t like to limit exactly what that looks like for anybody, because what do I know about that?

Of course, that runs exactly counter to all the marketing advice for artists. Tell a story to engage your viewers or collectors! And I know that’s good advice, and it really helps a lot of people to enter into the spirit of the artwork more easily. But my paintings are more about feelings and spirit, and I don’t want to constrain or limit what that looks like for anyone.

Gotta strike a balance here though, hence at the very least: a title.

Part of the Journey

Acrylic on canvas, 24×18″

You know, I’ve always loved train rides. Not that I’ve been on a train any time in my adult life, but still. I think they’re a beautiful way to travel.

You get to enjoy the journey. You get to see the country at a speed that you can appreciate the view. Which is what this painting reminded me of.

We can get so caught up in speed and the destination that it’s really easy to miss the beauty of each part of the journey.

And each part of the journey has gifts for us.

The Other Side of the Road

Acrylic on canvas, 14×11″

The Other Side of the Road

Looks pleasant enough over there, but are you willing to do what it takes to get there?

First you have to go through the red hot lava field. The good news is, there’s water on the other side of the lava. But then you’ll have to cross the water. Then if you manage to gain the opposite shore, there’s that road.

Now, here’s the tricky part. You see, the road is very pretty, you get a great close up view of what lies beyond, plus it’s a good way to assess where you’ve come from and how much you’ve accomplished. Which is considerable!

But it’s the road of temptation, it’s smooth and flat, and easy. And it’s really the greatest obstacle you’ll face, because this time it’s from within. You could spend the rest of your time happily going back and forth just sightseeing and congratulating yourself on your achievement. And that’s where your journey would stop.

But if you want to discover what lies beyond, you’ll have to let go of the path of comfort and prepare to take on the jungle and the terrain. Into terra incognita

The hero’s journey.

What say you, hero?

Boulevard of Trees

Boulevard of Trees

Well, that’s what the humans call them.

To the trees, it’s just family. Blood brothers and sisters. Like the fingers of a hand they all appear separate, but they’re really more like one organism, connected through the root system.

Yet of course they’re both, a stately procession of beautiful trees, and a family unit, and we can hold both those ideas in our minds at the same time. And appreciate our plant cousins even more because of it.
