One of a couple of national parks paintings I did a few months ago.

Just playing with some pretty pictures. I’m in an experimental few weeks. I guess it would be nice to be completely consistent in what I produce, but that’s not how my (ADHD) mind works.
There’s a consistency in drawing style, but not in content or even always in execution. For instance, I’m playing with this faux linocut look now, but I will probably go on to something else before long.
What I’ve come to realize is that that’s OK, although it might not be the best approach from a strictly business perspective. But the larger point is that if I’m going to keep painting (I am) what I do has to be sustainable. And that means coming to terms with and accepting how an ADHD brain works.
I get bored sooner or later, no matter how much I enjoy whatever it is I’m doing. I always need to try something new. And then another new thing. And on and on.
What I’m working towards is to maintain some kind of core consistency, even though that might be a pretty loose term as applied to my painting while still allowing me to keep the dopamine flowing with the next exciting new thing.
So we’ll see how that works for me. I’m cautiously optimistic that I’m starting to hit the right balance. If nothing else, I won’t be beating myself up for not presenting a consistent “brand.” And not beating myself up is a big win.

This is another one scaled up and painted from an earlier very small black and white version I did as an illustration for a publisher 20 years ago.
Looks like I’m embracing my cartoon roots more and more lately. It’s been tough fighting my urge to make things more realistic and for them to make sense. So in that regard, I’m very happy with this: not accurate realistically, but it sure gets the idea across.

I’ve got a series of landscapes going now. Just feel like taking a break from the more narrative pieces I’ve been doing lately.
This one is actually a redo of a small black and white illustration I did 20 years ago for a publisher. I was looking over those and I really liked the work I was doing back then, so it’s inspired the last few linocut style pieces I’ve done as well as a few other landscapes I’m working on.

Me listening to a podcast and forgetting I had the headphones on when I took the picture.
I’m working with larger sizes and larger drill bits. And therefore more detail in the dots, which I’m really enjoying. The magical ethereal effect is just magnified.
And yes, I’m having as much fun as it looks like!

Just for a change of scenery, we’re looking down on the landscape in this one. Sometimes you want to be among the trees, but sometimes you need the long view.

14.25″ x 5.5″ Acrylic on reclaimed wood, $316 (US shipping included)
The little curved black area at the top right and the thin black line at the bottom are not part of the painting, they’re areas where the wood doesn’t conform neatly to the rigid straight lines of the graphic image. What do you expect? It’s leftover wood from some project or other. I think these imperfections give the artworks an extra bit of character. Plus, I feel good that it didn’t go into a landfill. (You can feel good about it too, if you buy it! π)
Of course, I make sure to seal the wood with acrylic medium and multiple coats of acrylic gesso before painting to make sure the art itself is as archival as that painted on any traditional support.
I have no idea if people are going to respond positively to the recycled aspect or not, but it means something to me, so I’m going to keep going with it, as well as continuing to paint on traditional supports like panels and canvas.
So what does the title mean? Does it evoke traveling to you? My wife Tekakwitha came up with the title when I was stumped, and I can totally relate to it.Β

The Pharaoh Sleeps Tonight Acrylic on canvas board, 9″x12″
“…in the jungle, the mighty jungle”
My wife said it should be “in the desert” if it’s a pharaoh — but I pointed out that it’s a jungle in the painting. Then she said well then it’s a Central American pyramid. But it’s definitely an Egyptian pyramid. Not at all like the Central American ones.Β
Of course the desert was once lush and tropical, so either I’m conflating two different times or this is revisionist archaeology.
Or something…
Itβs just a painting. Give me a break.

The seasons have begun to turn all around, but on the island it’s eternal summer.
That island lives somewhere in my head, but I sometimes lose my way and need to find it all over again. The trick of course, is to not focus on the seasons turning all around. The colder harsher seasons may seem real — but as long as the island exists, are they really?
I can’t help seeing lollipops when I look at this. Well, fall foliage is eye candy anyway, so I guess that makes sense. Either that, or it’s just my serious sweet tooth kicking up its heels again. (Do teeth have heels? I didn’t think so…)
Anyway, we’re expecting our first shovelable (is that a word?) snow tomorrow, so even though I’m sure it will be pretty as always, it won’t be as colorful as this. I wonder if a snow scene in this style would work? Hmmm….
