Pretty Bird

8×8” Posca acrylic markers on canvas panel

This depicts the delicate balance between stillness and motion, as this colorful bird perches gracefully on a rustic pole, exuding a sense of tranquility, seemingly lost in thought. Observe how the bird balances on the pole, symbolizing resilience and harmony. Let its contemplative aura transport you to a world of introspection and wonder. (Caption combined & edited from 3 AI iterations.)

Above It All

8×8” Acrylic markers on canvas panel

Well this image completely flummoxed the AI captioning. Nine iterations produced nothing that related to the actual image. At least not that made any sense.

So. I’m going to let the image speak for itself. Or better yet, I’ll welcome any interpretations or captions you might have. I know what I think, but what you may offer is what interests me most.

Hot Summer Day

6×6” Acrylic markers on canvas panel

Feel the heat as the fiery red sky illuminates a serene landscape of majestic trees. (Partially AI generated caption.)

It’s so interesting to me to see what happens on the path between small pencil sketch and full color painting. This is not at all what I had in mind at the pencil stage, but I’m very happy with the direction it ultimately took. I guess all the wildfires and climate change in the news came through.

White Clouds

8×8” Acrylic markers on canvas panel

Follow the path less traveled and take a scenic drive through nature’s beauty. Feel the serenity of the open road and let your worries fade away. (AI generated caption – combined 2 iterations.)

It’s funny how once the AI gets a certain idea about the image, no matter how many iterations you run through, it’s almost always fixated on one aspect of the image.

(AI generated caption, with some modifications. Sometimes it’s hard to know what to say about my paintings, so this might be a tool to help me express myself. If I could say it in words, I’d be a writer or poet. But I’m a painter.)

Saint Grizz & Wohali

Saint Grizz & Wohali

I painted Saint Grizz just before the pandemic. My client then commissioned Wohali (Cherokee for eagle). Both were gifts for his father. I haven’t painted this exact style for a few years, but it was fun, and I’m happy with the result.

Both are acrylic on stretched canvas, 25×25″ so a lot bigger than I usually work. I think the thing holding me back from painting more larger works is just the expense and difficulty of shipping them safely and securely. These were both relatively local, so no shipping was involved.

The best way to ship paintings this size is to buy shipping boxes specifically made for paintings. I did that a few times years ago when we lived in Pittsburgh and I shipped paintings around the country for exhibitions. They’re great, very sturdy, beautifully cushioned, almost bomb proof!

Carries-Their-Prayers

Carries-Their-Prayers
25×25″ Acrylic on stretched canvas

In many Native American traditions the eagle, flying the highest, carries the peoples’ prayers to the Creator.

This was a first try at a bald eagle commission. I say first try, because the client purchased a bear portrait (Saint Grizz) and asked for a bald eagle in the same style. While I’m really happy with this one, the style really didn’t match as closely as it should have, so I painted another one. I’ll post that completed eagle next week along with the earlier bear portrait.

Lone Tree

16×20″ Acrylic on canvas panel

This has kind of a beachy feel. It reminds me a bit of some massive sand dunes we explored briefly at Lake Michigan years ago, although it’s not a representation of that specific location.
