White Clouds

8×8” Acrylic markers on canvas panel

Follow the path less traveled and take a scenic drive through nature’s beauty. Feel the serenity of the open road and let your worries fade away. (AI generated caption – combined 2 iterations.)

It’s funny how once the AI gets a certain idea about the image, no matter how many iterations you run through, it’s almost always fixated on one aspect of the image.

Saint Grizz & Wohali

Saint Grizz & Wohali

I painted Saint Grizz just before the pandemic. My client then commissioned Wohali (Cherokee for eagle). Both were gifts for his father. I haven’t painted this exact style for a few years, but it was fun, and I’m happy with the result.

Both are acrylic on stretched canvas, 25×25″ so a lot bigger than I usually work. I think the thing holding me back from painting more larger works is just the expense and difficulty of shipping them safely and securely. These were both relatively local, so no shipping was involved.

The best way to ship paintings this size is to buy shipping boxes specifically made for paintings. I did that a few times years ago when we lived in Pittsburgh and I shipped paintings around the country for exhibitions. They’re great, very sturdy, beautifully cushioned, almost bomb proof!

Carries-Their-Prayers

Carries-Their-Prayers
25×25″ Acrylic on stretched canvas

In many Native American traditions the eagle, flying the highest, carries the peoples’ prayers to the Creator.

This was a first try at a bald eagle commission. I say first try, because the client purchased a bear portrait (Saint Grizz) and asked for a bald eagle in the same style. While I’m really happy with this one, the style really didn’t match as closely as it should have, so I painted another one. I’ll post that completed eagle next week along with the earlier bear portrait.

Tornado

20×16” Acrylic on canvas panel

This is another one scaled up and painted from an earlier very small black and white version I did as an illustration for a publisher 20 years ago.

Looks like I’m embracing my cartoon roots more and more lately. It’s been tough fighting my urge to make things more realistic and for them to make sense. So in that regard, I’m very happy with this: not accurate realistically, but it sure gets the idea across.

Hello, I Am Flower

Acrylic on panel, 8×8″

“Hello, I Am Flower” is a representation of the Flower Diva. Or to be a little more scientific, a morphic field pattern of flowers.Β Thanks to Rupert Sheldrake for his morphic field concept.

Let Us Not Forget The Little Ones

Acrylic on cradled wood panel 6.5×12″

There are more microbes that are part of us than our own cells. Or are there? Technically, it’s a symbiosis, but aren’t they in a real sense an essential part of our physical being?

And aren’t we one with them as well as those we can see more easily?

All life is connected. We all depend on one another.

Cotton Candy Dreams

Acrylic on canvas 14×11″

Tekakwitha is awfully good at coming up with titles. I really like this one.

I think the technique is progressing nicely — I’m pretty happy with this one. I have another, sort of a sister painting to this one, but it’s perched on my easel because it just needs something. I have a vague idea of what, but I’m not ready to commit yet.

Painting — the way I paint at least — is always an example of MLK’s saying (and I know I’m going to misquote him here) “you don’t have to see the whole staircase to take the first step.” Or something like that.

I almost always get to a point in a painting where I think this is not going well, I’ve ruined it. Then I launch a desperate rescue operation. Which usually works out. Some pieces end up in the pile of shame, but thankfully only a very few. Almost always I can pull it off, and I’m happy with the final result. Like I planned it that way all along. Like with this one. 😏

First Snow

Acrylic on canvas, 14×11″

Cue the faerie dust!

It’s amazing how magical these pictures start to look once I sprinkle faerie dust into the paint ✨.

Dots within dots within dots!

Oh, I’m not done with the recycled pieces, I just go back and forth.
